What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
