This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
