The people of Israel mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A senior delegate familiar with the discussions said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official said the day's discussions finished without tangible results, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the differences between the two sides.
Key Points in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war administration of the region
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and many more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise needed for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported additional victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
