Democrats Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in armed forces or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an oath to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified statement condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and retract his violent discourse before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this nation and swore an oath to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of public representatives."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
