Both Deceased Students Named in the Ivy League School Shooting as Authorities Persist in Search for Killer.

Both young individuals who died in the recent tragic incident at Brown University were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter carried on following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our city”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a police source informed the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that searched the inn seized two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was allowed to go home, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
