A Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book lodging upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I caught public transport and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, believing I could pass the night somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing an interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared out of place since a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she said I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe to sleep.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted being a woman allowing a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she did that – and remain very grateful.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her good deed tenfold. We could all use more people like that woman.
